Project Brief:
Create a full chess set using planar materials and the slip-joint method to create 3d geometry.
Year: 2021
Concept:
Since the 6th century, the game of chess has evolved across cultures and regions. With this evolution came different forms inspired by the aesthetics of their place of origin. While the game has been around for centuries, it has developed an insular following that intimidates many new players. Our chess pieces pay homage to the history of chess and invites new users to become immersed in this game. Starting with the pawn, a representation of the earliest chess sets, to the king, a representation of the future of chess, you can use our pieces to follow the development of chess across cultures and history. Our traditional color palette and use of materials that harken back to the glossy ivory of many traditional boards allows users with all levels of experience to feel familiar with the board. In addition to form, our pieces will also have their own respective QR code, which the user can use to learn about the particular history of that piece and its use within the game.
