My teammate and I conducted ethnographic style research on these two restaurants in the Columbus area.
We created a research plan with dates and times of field research and analysis.
Took lots of notes and images of things we observed
ANALYSIS: 4 A's Method
Took all of our data and split it into sections including: Actors (people in the space), Artifacts (objects in the space), Actions (things happening), and Atmosphere (environmental factors).
ANALYSIS: Foot Traffic Map
This method uses lines to show paths taken by customers entering the restaurant.
ANALYSIS: Heat Map
The heat map shows where people inside the restaurant go within the space
Discovering Patterns
When looking at all of our data and analysis, we found a pattern of what we call "Unconventional Convenience" and we saw this in 3 specific places.
Whats the use of these stories?
From these 3 specific instances we came up with 3 actionable insights for our design team
Research Package
We then organized and sent the design team a Miro board with all of our raw data and analysis.
How was our research used?
The design team took all of this research and created 10 products.  Their products focused on the insight "how can design inspire people to manipulate materials in their own home?"
